Search Engine Optimisation BasicsSEO to many people is a mystery. This is not helped by the many seo companies out there who try to make it sound as if there are some magical techniques which nobody else is aware of and when they use these special "tricks" your site is suddenly going to rocket to the top of Google! Lets take a look at the basic techniques that ALL Good SEO companies use.What URL should I chose?The URL that you chose is extremely important, this cannot be over emphasised. Try to chose a name which contains the main keyword that you wish to target. Eg: a site about computers could chose www.computer7.comThe Title and Meta TagsThe title tag is the first place to start for on page optimisation. A good practice is to use several "Keywords" in the title tag but make sure that the title makes sense as this is what will appear in your search engine listings. Try to use a phrase that incorporates your main keywords. eg. "SEO Dynamics-Search Engine Optimisation Experts"This achieves 2 things. 1. It provides brand naming eg: SEO Dynamics 2. It contains the keywords: SEO and Search Engine Optimisation! Your Meta tags are the tags contained in the header section at the top of the page. These indicate to google as to the contents of the page. The "Keywords" tag should be filled with the most popular search terms which are relevant to your site. The "Description" tag should be a summary of the pages contents. Remeber to try and include keywords in this tag however remember that this is what people are going to see in Googles search results. Caution: NEVER use "keyword stuffing" - eg: dont stuff your meta tags full of useless keywords and especially dont repeat keywords more than once in the "Keywords" tag. NEVER use the word "Home" in your title tag. This is a complete waste of the most valuable piece of SEO power that your site has! MYTH: The Main keyword should ALWAYS appear FIRST in the title tag. We have experimented on several sites with this theory and it made NO difference. As long as the keyword is in the title the order is irrelevant. It may help to repeat one keyword twice as long as the title makes sense and doesnt appear simply as an attempt at keyword stuffing. Page ContentYour page content should be well structured and a good practice is to use a similar layout to this page. eg: Use a <H1> tag for your main heading. This gives the search engine a clear picture of what the page is about.Your individual subcategory titles on your page should use <H2> and <H3> tags according to the importance you wish to place on them. REMEMBER: Try to look at the page from a Robots (Googlebot's) point of view. The better laid out using clear, descriptive headings and subheadings and relevant keyword rich content means a better ranking page! Keywords always rank best when placed near the top of the page and then evenly dispersed throughout the page. Try to use variations on the same keywords words (eg: car, automobile,motor vehicle etc.) and good seo practices usually target as many different keywords as possible, remember however that first and foremost the page content must be interesting and imformative. DONT STUFF YOUR PAGE FULL OF THE SAME KEYWORDS: pages that are crammed full of the same keywords will be penalised by most search engines. There are loads of "Keyword Density" tools and articles on the internet however dont get too hung up on having exactly 5% etc. of a certain word and it's ALWAYS better to have less keywords on the page than too many. Inbound Links the most important aspect of SEOWhen you are happy that your sites pages are optimised the next step is your offsite optimisation. This is known as link building. A successful link building campaign consists of getting as many QUALITY links placed on other peoples sites pointing to your site.In saying this there are specific methods to follow. PLEASE dont go around changing links with every site you can find (known as reciprocal linking or link exchange). The correct method to use is to find sites with similar content to your own site and exchange links with them. Link pages with more than 50 links on them arent worth linking to as Google tends to classify them as "Link Farms". Facts on Link Building: Link building must be done carefully. Dont waste hours and hours chasing non relevant link exchanges and DONT pay to get listed in directories which have little authority with Google. Ten good links from relevant sites with similar content will help produce better search engine ranking than 500 links from trashy, non relevant sites. Link Anchor Text: the text used in your inbound links is extremely important. A link pointing to your site needs to contain the keywords that you wish to target. Never just add links that say "visit our site" or "click here" etc. If youre site is about computers make sure that the link you have placed on the other site says "computers" or "cheap computers" etc. Research Keyword PopularityNever assume when designing a website that you know what the most popular keywords or key phrases are.
